Mediately can be the meeting of
his National Security Council
00:00:46
a strongly worded reaction also came from
Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abbate.
00:00:52
How many Campbell he said of North
Korea has gone ahead to head with
00:00:56
a nuclear test this is absolutely not
acceptable and we will have to strongly
00:01:01
protest the question now being posed
is after numerous sanctions placed on
00:01:05
Pyongyang what can the world now do with
North Korea after the latest test that's
00:01:11
the question I posed to be
00:01:12
a way senior White House correspondent
Steve Herman that is really the question
00:01:16
because over the decades.
Everything short of
00:01:19
a resumption of Korean War has been tried
have been negotiations and deals made
00:01:25
with North Korea there have been many
many Her ounds of sanctions by various
00:01:32
countries and the United
Nations as well U.N.
00:01:35
Resolutions condemnations all sorts of
diplomatic protests so it remains to be
00:01:42
seen says Herman what will be done make
sure you stay with us here on be away for
00:01:48
all the latest information this is be
00:01:49

he goes along but you don't on
00:02:14
a seal Pena Nieto said the relationship
with the new government of the United
00:02:18

Trump was especially hard on Mexico
00:02:55
labeling its migrants to the U.S.
00:02:57
As murderers and rapists He's also been
00:02:59
a strong critic of NAFTA and has threatened
to withdraw from that pact. The U.S.

what impact that flooding will have on
00:03:20

release even more toxins
into what is already
00:03:28
a toxic brew of chemicals and waste already
awash in he was ten and surrounding
00:03:33

Associated Press reported Saturday that its
00:03:37

Superfund sites either by boat Bickel
00:03:42
or on foot and the flooding of the Superfund
sites adds to concerns already raised
00:03:48
because of the concentration of chemical
and petroleum plants in the Houston area
00:03:54

largest in the history of that city Fire
00:04:37
officials say they are confident they can
bring the blaze under control I'm Ira
00:04:41
Mehlman. That's the
latest world news from B
00:04:46
o eight. Russ
00:05:04
Davis here welcoming you to another hour
of the best of jazz past and present tense
00:05:09
conversation with the music makers as we
celebrate some new releases revisiting the
00:05:15
work of Masters of jazz.
00:05:25
There are
00:05:25
a number of new releases celebrating Charlie
Parker Duke Ellington Frank Sinatra
00:05:31
and Antonio Carlos your beam Erroll Garner
John Coltrane and so many others that
00:05:38
have just come out with
00:05:40
a new twist or two on those classic
songs from those great masters of jazz
00:05:46
and on this edition of jazz America we're
celebrating those masters with this new
00:05:51
work and we'll begin this hour with the
work of the great Oliver Nelson Oliver
00:05:57
Nelson wrote
00:05:58
a number of famous songs chief among them
probably stolen moments and he passed
00:06:03
away at the very young age
of only forty four but left
00:06:07
a wonderful musical legacy that
touched so many people including
00:06:10
a young trumpet player from the northeastern
United States named John Van or he was
00:06:16
so impressed with Oliver NELSON
It inspired him to become
00:06:21
a jazz musician and writer he wanted to
pay homage to that great influence in his
00:06:26
life and from the album stolen moments
celebrating Oliver Nelson Here's John
00:06:32
vendors version of blues and the abstract
truth to begin this hour of the always
00:06:38
jazz America.
00:10:46
And how it is going back and why that's
00:10:48
a thing that I found out. Too late I guess
because on the on the subway this gone
00:10:55
wildly beyond this where I thought that
no price on what I had to feed. If
00:11:02
I could move from one whole lot with my
looks awesome move that I know that is
00:11:07
hopeless have never been it clear and
that's why I despair heart of the unknown
00:11:12
hope and someday you and the flame
and Monte and the Revel will.
00:13:13
And.
00:13:34
Did Saddam learned the how tos
combine was hard but that's
00:13:38
a thing that off found out too late I guess
because. My father's gone wild leave me
00:13:45
on display there be no
price on love but I had
00:13:49
a. Practical problem one
miracle. On the front of me.
00:13:56
And on no it's hopeless good never really
care that's why there's. Hope and someday
00:14:02
you'll know the flame in my
heart began forever will.
00:14:30
Be to live out of food and up
the top number that many of us.
00:14:37
Took. A lot of on the. Other end of
the building but I don't know what I
00:14:44
don't know. In the letter the. Little.
00:14:51
Let it be able to. Run
enough. You know. You need
00:14:58
to. Do that and believe that it you know.
00:15:14
There are few vocalists in jazz more popular
these days than Gregory Porter that's
00:15:21
his contribution to the new release in
celebration of the legendary Charlie Parker
00:15:28
titled The Passion of Charlie Parker and
not only does this wonderful work include
00:15:34
the vocal work of the likes of Madaline
pear row as well as Melody Gardot Kurt
00:15:40
Elling and Luciano Sauza but also
fantastic instrumentalists among them
00:15:48
the gentleman who plays the part of Charlie
Parker if you will in this presentation
00:15:53
tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin Let's talk
to him and then hear more from this new
00:15:59
release The Passion of Charlie
Parker here on V.O.A.
00:16:02
Is jazz America at the two thousand and
twelve Detroit Jazz Festival after his
00:16:06
performance I had a
chance to sit down with
00:16:09
a great saxophonist composer and bandleader
for the very first time here's some of
00:16:13
that conversation now I want to get
00:16:14
a lot of your as much of your background
as you can because this is my first chance
00:16:18
to speak with you on the record it's growing
up and played some reggae music and so
00:16:22
it was sort of part of my musical D.N.A.
00:16:24
In
00:16:24
a way. You'd asked me about you know also
where I grew up in that I grew up in Santa
00:16:30
Cruz and my father's musician and my parents
were divorced my dad would pick me up
00:16:36
one day a week and he would drive
me down to the mall where he had
00:16:38
a kid and I would help
him set up and he had
00:16:41
a little chair on the bandstand and I would
sit and just listen to them play and
00:16:46
they played great American music so Great
American Songbook standards. Jeter esque
00:16:52
Latin jazz and like R. And B.
00:16:55
Kind of jazz Crusaders Mercy Mercy Feel
Like Making Love Mustang Sally kind of
00:17:00
tunes so all that stuff for me was
coexisting equally when I was
00:17:03
a kid plus the reggae influence that I was
hearing plus the Tower of Power and I
00:17:09
had
00:17:09
a thing and on top of that Paul Jackson played
bass in her piece yet in the headhunters
00:17:16
living in Santa Cruz and I started playing
with his group when I was sixteen years
00:17:20
old you know and at that point I didn't
really know her be here talk was for the
00:17:23
headhunters but I was. Just I was an amazing
musician so I was lucky enough to have
00:17:29
all those experiences and I think all of
that kind of feeds into my openness to try
00:17:34
to bring these things together and I think
you know the old goat musical language
00:17:40
to do it you just answer three or four of
my questions right there one was going to
00:17:44
be with all this for rioting that you've
exhibited in this show we are sought today
00:17:49
in this we're at record and in your past
records too and in all your other projects
00:17:53
that you've been part of I was going to say
either Variety is the spice of life for
00:17:58
you or you're never alone with
00:17:59
a schizo front Excel I don't know which
one it is i think i'm just have to sift
00:18:03
through all the things that you've told
me about all those influences and I never
00:18:07
knew about the Northern California
reggae thing I knew that
00:18:10
a lot of Brazilians went to Southern
California but reggae and in the north and in
00:18:14
the ISP a funk blending
with that well what
00:18:16
a combination and and again that I mean I
have to say for me it's it coexists you
00:18:22
know it's not like OK I'm now I'm going
to do electronica record or I'm going to
00:18:26
you know Brazilian record after Keep a
record I mean all that stuff is part of
00:18:31
a part of my musical language and
and and so I'm happy to you know be
00:18:38
musician and have all
those things to trough.
00:18:50
I just want to know why to secret just
how you make your saxophone sound some
00:18:54
something really isn't of
00:18:56
a bird flying bird in the sky. But
tell me I really want to know
00:19:02
everything every little thing you do
I got you know you know there's got
00:19:08
connections around the cradle we're told
in town. Deals go down you know exactly
00:19:14
what I mean it's all down me I really wanna
know I wanna do everything every little
00:19:19
thing you do every thing.
00:19:30
That the.
00:19:56
You know. I mean I want to. Thank.
00:20:50
You.
00:21:46
This is the plates and from. A couple
minutes from the fan invent just mention
00:21:53
that and that's
00:21:54
a. Good. Thing it's taking
00:22:01
the Charlie Parker classic blue Mido and
turning it into a vocal piece that is
00:22:06
a Louisiana Sauza from the passion of
Charlie Parker Now here's another rare and
00:22:12
wonderful new release and Rare is the
operative term because on the album
00:22:18
rediscovered Ellington new takes on Duke's
rare and unheard music pianist Gary dial
00:22:24
saxophonist Dick goats and conductor and
arranger rich door Rossa were commissioned
00:22:29
to take some rare songs written by Duke
Ellington that hardly ever been heard and
00:22:35
bring them to life with the W D R big bad
as they did on the song you're about to
00:22:41
hear untitled Kiki on
jazz America from V.O.A.
00:22:44
One.
00:22:53
Leg.
00:23:02
Length
00:23:09

00:23:36
I've. Led.
00:23:58
A.
00:24:06
Leg.
00:24:12
Length.
00:24:22
Play. Plenty of eleven.
00:24:34
Eleven. Eleven.
00:24:41
Eleven.
00:26:53
Eleven
00:27:01
. Eleven. I've.
00:27:15
Played I've. I've.
00:27:22
I've
00:27:32
. I've.
00:29:51
Can you believe that there actually been
some Duke Ellington songs that no one's
00:29:55
ever heard before they found them in some
archives and turned them with these new
00:29:59
recordings into rediscovered Ellington new
takes on Duke's rare and unheard music
00:30:06
Gary dial Dick Oates and rich rose
so with a W D R big band I have
00:30:11
a feeling you're to be hearing more of that
in the future here on jazz America and
00:30:15
speaking of in the future as we continue
our salute to the masters of jazz and new
00:30:20
recordings in honor of them I've got two
coming up from great artists from New
00:30:26
Orleans but first I want to invite you to
send me an email if you have a question
00:30:32
a comment or maybe request for music whatever
the case may be I'd love to hear from
00:30:36
you and here is the email address to which
you can write me I'll give it to you
00:30:40

00:31:06
a message I've received from Wilson. And
he wrote this is Wilson from Dar es Salaam
00:31:12
Tanzania saying thank you for the great
jazz music for the relaxing lunchtime here
00:31:18
blessings on you Wilson wanted to tell him
and I'll tell you now that my daughter
00:31:24
Blair visited the wonderful and
exotic country of Tanzania
00:31:28
a few years ago and I'm so jealous she
loved it and I say thank you for listening
00:31:33
and being in touch with me and please
spread the word of the joys of jazz and I
00:31:38
promise to spread the word of the wonders
of Tanzania and now let's hear music from
00:31:44
two of the great masters from the birthplace
of jazz New Orleans Louisiana and
00:31:49
Wilson will dedicate this to you we're going
to hear first Alan who saw it from his
00:31:55
album American tunes he was one of the
great masters of New Orleans music for
00:31:59
decades and on this album he paid homage
to some of the great American writers
00:32:05
including Billy Strayhorn Bill Evans
Duke Ellington even Paul Simon Earl
00:32:11
Fada Hines and in this
case Fats Waller with
00:32:15
a song vipers drag and we'll follow that
with one of the modern masters in New
00:32:19
Orleans music Stanton Moore and his salute
to his fellow New Orleanian Allen two
00:32:24
songs.
00:33:23
Hold. We've.
00:33:36
Closed or load.
00:34:17
A.
00:34:45
Fox.
00:35:35
It's.
00:40:32
One of the busiest men in the town they
call the Big Easy know New Orleans Stanton
00:40:38
Moore the great drummer he works with the
band Galactic and so many others and from
00:40:44
his album
00:40:45
a salute to his fellow New Orleanian
entitled with you. In mind that is an Allen
00:40:52
Toussaint classic The song job now let's
turn to another of the greats of jazz
00:40:58
today looking back at the music of one of
the greats of jazz of the past with his
00:41:03
second release with his big band he calls
the monk Astra it's John Beasley he won
00:41:08
Grammy awards and other awards for his
volume one and now he's just released Volume
00:41:13
two we'll hear a cut from that after
we talked to him here on V.O.A.
00:41:17
Is jazz America Mr musician Mr
Producer Mr arranger Mr composer of Mr
00:41:23
Grammy Award winner and nominee in well
John Beasley great to see you here jazz
00:41:29
connector good to be here and good to
see you well I'd have to say first off
00:41:34
congratulations on all the accolades that
have come your way and I I know you've
00:41:39
appreciated the great stone through the
years how does taking on a master like say
00:41:44
a Felonious Monk compared to doing your
own songs it's too different to two
00:41:49
different processes to differ processes
but. The Loneliest Monk's music is is so
00:41:55
pliable you know sign of
00:41:56
a great composer is as you can you
know you can listen to Bach it in
00:42:00
a tempo or S.O.C.
00:42:02
You know you can put any kind of beat to
Stevie Wonder let's say and Monk is like
00:42:07
that too is it's
00:42:09
a so it's it's set up for creativity in the
first place you know and the difference
00:42:15
is is that you know I've got
00:42:16
a launching pad the cologne is Monk and
you know with my own music I kind of have
00:42:22
to wait for my launching pad you know or
take long walks and maybe some some ritual
00:42:27
come to my mind and I'll build off of that
well said musician artist and director
00:42:33
quite often to John Beasley great to
see you and best of luck in winning
00:42:38
a Grammy soon thank you
very much that's Octavia.
00:48:03
Thank. You.
00:49:00
From John Beasley and Monk Estoril Volume
two with I mean you to another salute to
00:49:05
a great From jazz past
from the album Dear dizzy
00:49:08
a tribute to Dizzy Gillespie Here's the
song things to come with Jimmy Heath John
00:49:14
fat us and the Temple University jazz
band on jazz America from V.O.A.
00:49:19

00:51:00
I've.
00:52:20
I've.
00:52:22
I've
00:52:32
I've. I've.
00:52:39
I've I've.
00:53:36
Look. Hi this is Mike Stern and you're
listening to jazz America with Russ Davis on
00:53:42
the Voice of America.
00:54:56
You know.
00:55:33
There's.
00:56:13
No.
00:57:08
That.
00:59:00
From the album fusion for my it's
00:59:02
a guitar tribute that's the contribution
of the great guitarist Mike Starr who used
00:59:08
to be in Miles Davis his band in the early
nineteenth we'll hear some of that story
00:59:14
and you'll hear lots more Mike Stern's music
his newest music from the album track
00:59:20
next week on jazz America and you'll also
hear the story of how Mike Stern in July
00:59:26
two thousand and sixteen had
00:59:28
a terrible accident in which he broke
both of his songs he came back quickly so
00:59:35
we'll call Mike Stern the comeback kid and
feature him in his new release on the
00:59:40
next jazz America join me then won't you.
00:59:54
From Washington this is the only news.
01:00:02
I'm Ira Mehlman reporting the U.S.
01:00:04
President has strong words for both North
and South Korea in the wake of the latest
01:00:09
nuclear test in the north U.S.
01:00:11
President Donald Trump condemned North
Korea Sunday for carrying out its largest
01:00:16
nuclear test yet calling it
01:00:17
a rogue nation whose words and actions
could kid you to be very hostile and
01:00:22
dangerous to the United States and a
pair of Twitter comments the U.S.
01:00:26
Leader said North Korea has become
01:00:27
a great threat an embarrassment to China
which is trying to help but with little
01:00:32
success however Trump also rebuked U.S.
01:00:35
Ally South Korea saying Seoul is finding
as I have told them that their talk of
01:00:40
appeasement with North Korea will not work
they only understand one thing be always
01:00:46
the new White House correspondent
Steve Herman remember it was just
01:00:49
a few weeks. Ago when the president trumped
threaten North Korea with fire and fury
01:00:55
and that he had also been hopeful that as
01:01:00
a result of his. Personal relationship
with the leader of China Xi Jinping
01:01:06
that the pressure from Beijing and this
sort of rhetoric would get North Korea to
01:01:12
think twice about going ahead and we have
known for many months that there had been
01:01:17
extreme pressure by the Chinese to dissuade
the North Koreans from conducting their
01:01:23
six nuclear test Well now there's the
question of really how much leverage does
01:01:30
China have over the North Koreans and what
they can do because of the stage that
01:01:35
we're now at and so I think it's very obvious
to everyone watching this that we are
01:01:41
at a very delicate point and V.O.A.

is after numerous sanctions placed on
00:01:05
Pyongyang what can the world now do with
North Korea after the latest test that's
00:01:11
the question I posed to be
00:01:12
a way senior White House correspondent
Steve Herman that is really the question
00:01:16
because over the decades.
Everything short of
00:01:19
a resumption of Korean War has been tried
have been negotiations and deals made
00:01:25
with North Korea there have been many
many Her ounds of sanctions by various
00:01:32
countries and the United
Nations as well U.N.

diplomatic protests so it remains to be

00:05:04
Davis here welcoming you to another hour
of the best of jazz past and present tense
00:05:09
conversation with the music makers as we
celebrate some new releases revisiting the
00:05:15
work of Masters of jazz.
00:05:25
There are
00:05:25
a number of new releases celebrating Charlie
Parker Duke Ellington Frank Sinatra
00:05:31
and Antonio Carlos your beam Erroll Garner
John Coltrane and so many others that
00:05:38
have just come out with
00:05:40
a new twist or two on those classic
songs from those great masters of jazz
00:05:46
and on this edition of jazz America we're
celebrating those masters with this new
00:05:51
work and we'll begin this hour with the
work of the great Oliver Nelson Oliver
00:05:57
Nelson wrote
00:05:58
a number of famous songs chief among them
probably stolen moments and he passed
00:06:03
away at the very young age
of only forty four but left
00:06:07
a wonderful musical legacy that
touched so many people including
00:06:10
a young trumpet player from the northeastern
United States named John Van or he was
00:06:16
so impressed with Oliver NELSON
It inspired him to become
00:06:21
a jazz musician and writer he wanted to
pay homage to that great influence in his
00:06:26
life and from the album stolen moments
celebrating Oliver Nelson Here's John
00:06:32
vendors version of blues and the abstract
truth to begin this hour of the always
00:06:38
jazz America.
00:10:46
And how it is going back and why that's
00:10:48
a thing that I found out. Too late I guess
because on the on the subway this gone
00:10:55
wildly beyond this where I thought that
no price on what I had to feed. If
00:11:02
I could move from one whole lot with my
looks awesome move that I know that is
00:11:07
hopeless have never been it clear and
that's why I despair heart of the unknown
00:11:12
hope and someday you and the flame
and Monte and the Revel will.
00:13:13
And.
00:13:34
Did Saddam learned the how tos
combine was hard but that's
00:13:38
a thing that off found out too late I guess
because. My father's gone wild leave me
00:13:45
on display there be no
price on love but I had
00:13:49
a. Practical problem one
miracle. On the front of me.
00:13:56
And on no it's hopeless good never really
care that's why there's. Hope and someday
00:14:02
you'll know the flame in my
heart began forever will.
00:14:30
Be to live out of food and up
the top number that many of us.
00:14:37
Took. A lot of on the. Other end of
the building but I don't know what I
00:14:44
don't know. In the letter the. Little.
00:14:51
Let it be able to. Run
enough. You know. You need
00:14:58
to. Do that and believe that it you know.
00:15:14
There are few vocalists in jazz more popular
these days than Gregory Porter that's
00:15:21
his contribution to the new release in
celebration of the legendary Charlie Parker
00:15:28
titled The Passion of Charlie Parker and
not only does this wonderful work include
00:15:34
the vocal work of the likes of Madaline
pear row as well as Melody Gardot Kurt
00:15:40
Elling and Luciano Sauza but also
fantastic instrumentalists among them
00:15:48
the gentleman who plays the part of Charlie
Parker if you will in this presentation
00:15:53
tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin Let's talk
to him and then hear more from this new
00:15:59
release The Passion of Charlie
Parker here on V.O.A.
00:16:02
Is jazz America at the two thousand and
twelve Detroit Jazz Festival after his
00:16:06
performance I had a
chance to sit down with
00:16:09
a great saxophonist composer and bandleader
for the very first time here's some of
00:16:13
that conversation now I want to get
00:16:14
a lot of your as much of your background
as you can because this is my first chance
00:16:18
to speak with you on the record it's growing
up and played some reggae music and so
00:16:22
it was sort of part of my musical D.N.A.
00:16:24
In
00:16:24
a way. You'd asked me about you know also
where I grew up in that I grew up in Santa
00:16:30
Cruz and my father's musician and my parents
were divorced my dad would pick me up
00:16:36
one day a week and he would drive
me down to the mall where he had
00:16:38
a kid and I would help
him set up and he had
00:16:41
a little chair on the bandstand and I would
sit and just listen to them play and
00:16:46
they played great American music so Great
American Songbook standards. Jeter esque
00:16:52
Latin jazz and like R. And B.
00:16:55
Kind of jazz Crusaders Mercy Mercy Feel
Like Making Love Mustang Sally kind of
00:17:00
tunes so all that stuff for me was
coexisting equally when I was
00:17:03
a kid plus the reggae influence that I was
hearing plus the Tower of Power and I
00:17:09
had
00:17:09
a thing and on top of that Paul Jackson played
bass in her piece yet in the headhunters
00:17:16
living in Santa Cruz and I started playing
with his group when I was sixteen years
00:17:20
old you know and at that point I didn't
really know her be here talk was for the
00:17:23
headhunters but I was. Just I was an amazing
musician so I was lucky enough to have
00:17:29
all those experiences and I think all of
that kind of feeds into my openness to try
00:17:34
to bring these things together and I think
you know the old goat musical language
00:17:40
to do it you just answer three or four of
my questions right there one was going to
00:17:44
be with all this for rioting that you've
exhibited in this show we are sought today
00:17:49
in this we're at record and in your past
records too and in all your other projects
00:17:53
that you've been part of I was going to say
either Variety is the spice of life for
00:17:58
you or you're never alone with
00:17:59
a schizo front Excel I don't know which
one it is i think i'm just have to sift
00:18:03
through all the things that you've told
me about all those influences and I never
00:18:07
knew about the Northern California
reggae thing I knew that
00:18:10
a lot of Brazilians went to Southern
California but reggae and in the north and in
00:18:14
the ISP a funk blending
with that well what
00:18:16
a combination and and again that I mean I
have to say for me it's it coexists you
00:18:22
know it's not like OK I'm now I'm going
to do electronica record or I'm going to
00:18:26
you know Brazilian record after Keep a
record I mean all that stuff is part of
00:18:31
a part of my musical language and
and and so I'm happy to you know be
00:18:38
musician and have all
those things to trough.
00:18:50
I just want to know why to secret just
how you make your saxophone sound some
00:18:54
something really isn't of
00:18:56
a bird flying bird in the sky. But
tell me I really want to know
00:19:02
everything every little thing you do
I got you know you know there's got
00:19:08
connections around the cradle we're told
in town. Deals go down you know exactly
00:19:14
what I mean it's all down me I really wanna
know I wanna do everything every little
00:19:19
thing you do every thing.
00:19:30
That the.
00:19:56
You know. I mean I want to. Thank.
00:20:50
You.
00:21:46
This is the plates and from. A couple
minutes from the fan invent just mention
00:21:53
that and that's
00:21:54
a. Good. Thing it's taking
00:22:01
the Charlie Parker classic blue Mido and
turning it into a vocal piece that is
00:22:06
a Louisiana Sauza from the passion of
Charlie Parker Now here's another rare and
00:22:12
wonderful new release and Rare is the
operative term because on the album
00:22:18
rediscovered Ellington new takes on Duke's
rare and unheard music pianist Gary dial
00:22:24
saxophonist Dick goats and conductor and
arranger rich door Rossa were commissioned
00:22:29
to take some rare songs written by Duke
Ellington that hardly ever been heard and
00:22:35
bring them to life with the W D R big bad
as they did on the song you're about to
00:22:41
hear untitled Kiki on

00:27:22
I've
00:27:32
. I've.
00:29:51
Can you believe that there actually been
some Duke Ellington songs that no one's
00:29:55
ever heard before they found them in some
archives and turned them with these new
00:29:59
recordings into rediscovered Ellington new
takes on Duke's rare and unheard music
00:30:06
Gary dial Dick Oates and rich rose
so with a W D R big band I have
00:30:11
a feeling you're to be hearing more of that
in the future here on jazz America and
00:30:15
speaking of in the future as we continue
our salute to the masters of jazz and new
00:30:20
recordings in honor of them I've got two
coming up from great artists from New
00:30:26
Orleans but first I want to invite you to
send me an email if you have a question
00:30:32
a comment or maybe request for music whatever
the case may be I'd love to hear from

he wrote this is Wilson from Dar es Salaam
00:31:12
Tanzania saying thank you for the great
jazz music for the relaxing lunchtime here
00:31:18
blessings on you Wilson wanted to tell him
and I'll tell you now that my daughter
00:31:24
Blair visited the wonderful and
exotic country of Tanzania
00:31:28
a few years ago and I'm so jealous she
loved it and I say thank you for listening
00:31:33
and being in touch with me and please
spread the word of the joys of jazz and I
00:31:38
promise to spread the word of the wonders
of Tanzania and now let's hear music from
00:31:44
two of the great masters from the birthplace
of jazz New Orleans Louisiana and
00:31:49
Wilson will dedicate this to you we're going
to hear first Alan who saw it from his
00:31:55
album American tunes he was one of the
great masters of New Orleans music for
00:31:59
decades and on this album he paid homage
to some of the great American writers
00:32:05
including Billy Strayhorn Bill Evans
Duke Ellington even Paul Simon Earl
00:32:11
Fada Hines and in this
case Fats Waller with
00:32:15
a song vipers drag and we'll follow that
with one of the modern masters in New
00:32:19
Orleans music Stanton Moore and his salute
to his fellow New Orleanian Allen two
00:32:24
songs.
00:33:23

One of the busiest men in the town they
call the Big Easy know New Orleans Stanton
00:40:38
Moore the great drummer he works with the
band Galactic and so many others and from
00:40:44
his album
00:40:45
a salute to his fellow New Orleanian
entitled with you. In mind that is an Allen
00:40:52
Toussaint classic The song job now let's
turn to another of the greats of jazz
00:40:58
today looking back at the music of one of
the greats of jazz of the past with his
00:41:03
second release with his big band he calls
the monk Astra it's John Beasley he won
00:41:08
Grammy awards and other awards for his
volume one and now he's just released Volume
00:41:13
two we'll hear a cut from that after
we talked to him here on V.O.A.
00:41:17
Is jazz America Mr musician Mr
Producer Mr arranger Mr composer of Mr
00:41:23
Grammy Award winner and nominee in well
John Beasley great to see you here jazz
00:41:29
connector good to be here and good to
see you well I'd have to say first off
00:41:34
congratulations on all the accolades that
have come your way and I I know you've
00:41:39
appreciated the great stone through the
years how does taking on a master like say
00:41:44
a Felonious Monk compared to doing your
own songs it's too different to two
00:41:49
different processes to differ processes
but. The Loneliest Monk's music is is so
00:41:55
pliable you know sign of
00:41:56
a great composer is as you can you
know you can listen to Bach it in
00:42:00
a tempo or S.O.C.
00:42:02
You know you can put any kind of beat to
Stevie Wonder let's say and Monk is like
00:42:07
that too is it's
00:42:09
a so it's it's set up for creativity in the
first place you know and the difference
00:42:15
is is that you know I've got
00:42:16
a launching pad the cologne is Monk and
you know with my own music I kind of have
00:42:22
to wait for my launching pad you know or
take long walks and maybe some some ritual
00:42:27
come to my mind and I'll build off of that
well said musician artist and director
00:42:33
quite often to John Beasley great to
see you and best of luck in winning
00:42:38
a Grammy soon thank you
very much that's Octavia.
00:48:03
Thank. You.

00:55:33
There's.
00:56:13
No.
00:57:08
That.
00:59:00
From the album fusion for my it's
00:59:02
a guitar tribute that's the contribution
of the great guitarist Mike Starr who used
00:59:08
to be in Miles Davis his band in the early
nineteenth we'll hear some of that story
00:59:14
and you'll hear lots more Mike Stern's music
his newest music from the album track

and South Korea in the wake of the latest
01:00:09
nuclear test in the north U.S.
01:00:11
President Donald Trump condemned North
Korea Sunday for carrying out its largest
01:00:16
nuclear test yet calling it

Leader said North Korea has become
01:00:27

with the leader of China Xi Jinping
01:01:06
that the pressure from Beijing and this
sort of rhetoric would get North Korea to
01:01:12
think twice about going ahead and we have
known for many months that there had been
01:01:17
extreme pressure by the Chinese to dissuade
the North Koreans from conducting their
01:01:23
six nuclear test Well now there's the
question of really how much leverage does
01:01:30
China have over the North Koreans and what
they can do because of the stage that
01:01:35
we're now at and so I think it's very obvious
to everyone watching this that we are
01:01:41
at a very delicate point and V.O.A.
